Mezgebu was born in 1960 in the Northern Shoa region of Ethiopia. From childhood he has loved being surrounded by nature, and was always doodling in his exercise books.
While at high school in Debrebrehan, he knew he wanted to paint. He graduated, with honours, from the AAU Ale School of fine art and design (Addis Ababa).
Through hard work, he won a scholarship to the Ilya Efimovich Repin Leningrad Institute for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (St. Petersburg, Russia). There he developed his instinctive artistic skills and earned the highest honours in his Master’s degree.
Since returning to Ethiopia, Mezgebu has had an impressive career. He has worked as painting instructor and then Department Head at the School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University; as an artist and lecturer at the African Art Symposium, 2001 – invited by the Japan Foundation Study Tour Program in Tokyo and Kyoto; and as a successful studio artist.
Mezgebu has exhibited his works many times in Ethiopia as well as in several countries abroad, including Russia, Germany, America and China. His works are found in St Georges Gallery, Sheraton Addis, and in private collections in Ethiopia and abroad.
Mezgebu speaks three languages, is married, and lives and works in Ethiopia.
