Born in Woliso, Ethiopia, Gashahun has found a great appreciation for his work within the art world – which he refers to as the an ‘art family’. He studied painting and graphics at the Addis Ababa University school of fine arts & design, and majored in painting at Teferi Mekonnen College.
This is his artist statement: ‘Universe is within the process of spirit and form. I believe that the success and distortion of this process will be the reason for the occurrence of new things. As part of the universe, I am closer for situations, changes and happenings of which I am concerned about the damages but not worried about the solutions. Because I believe that working my painting through an appropriate interaction with things by itself enables work of art to provide a solution.
For the proper interaction with things and to get some kind of visual language, I exposed myself to engage to another world beyond the knowledge and experience I earned from the real world; then I innocently serve an organic and geometric shapes created as a result of this process. At last I rejoice myself by building a general form.’
Gashahun has shown his work many times throughout Ethiopia, in group and solo exhibitions. In addition to the Sheraton Addis and the Ethiopian National Theatre Gallery, his work has most recently been shown at the Ethiopian National Museum in an exhibition entitled, ‘Yeabay Zemen Tibeb’.
